Information Hoarding and Fucking Up/Becoming Free

Awesome thing of the week, Time Paradox, Website

Posted June 27, 2010 at 4:34 pm by Severed Head

This article/blogpost/wtf-ever is basically a continuation on my thoughts on the internet, and the digital age, and the omnipresence of technology and the unlimitedness of the databases available to us…
I guess I would describe myself as kind of an information hoarder. I have a bunch of files on my computer just full of text and shit, and often, I don’t even read them. Organizing such things can be incredibly difficult.
For example, I have a file on my computer that is made up entirely of notes. Things to do throughout the day-stuff I have to get done, sometimes important passwords, really great ideas that I can reflect upon later to see if I still think they’re worthy, etc. This is all in one giant text file in the most boring font you can imagine because all it is is some fucking notes, which a bunch of line breaks between varying pieces of information. Every now and then, I’ll skim over some of the most recent stuff in this giant file, and it will provide with reminders or information I need.
I’ve thought a lot in my life recently about all of this, and I’ve decided I want to get rid of this kind of completely unregulated clutter/mess that I will probably never get back to. Just clear out. And some fuck up somewhere along the line has gone and done it for me. I restarted my computer today, and my text file was suddenly empty. Normally, I have Time Machine setup to have all of this kind of stuff backed up, but, recently, as a result of quite a few events, mostly installing a new hard drive, the Time Machine was erased, and I turned it off temporarily. Basically, I forgot to turn it back on, and now there is no possible way for me to recover that notes file. While this initially pissed me off, I’ve already come to accept it (total time to go through those stages of grief: less than 5 minutes?)… There could be some really important things I lost, but honestly, I really don’t know. I’m going to start anew, making my notes more organized and more though-out. I’m going to use them in a way that’s easy to review for reminders, and a way that’s harder for important information to get lost.
Hopefully. I’m trying to look at this as an opportunity.
Now, there are still a bunch of other little bits of information I’ve stored through bookmarks (links to funny pictures that I want to post on here, interesting articles, etc.), and the thing is: I RARELY go over this stuff. A lot of it is fascinating and, provided I put my time in, it could really all help me out. But it’s holding me back in a sense from reading new stuff and writing new articles on here.
It really is a lot like hoarding, except that it’s all digital. I think I’m pretty good at getting rid of actual physical stuff that is no longer useful to me (minus some video games/consoles–mostly because I don’t know what the fuck to do with them… Continuing with this side note, I’ve hacked my Wii in such a way that I can basically play any NES/SNES/GB/GBA/GBC/N64/Genesis/Game Gear game I want on my Wii wirelessly with the use of a Wiimote and a classic game controller, rendering most of my game systems, except my PS2 and my Wii and an actual GBA, useless (although I only do have a few games for the GBA, so I might as well get a newer DS and some flashcarts or something)), but I seem to have a difficult time getting rid of a link that I haven’t fully read/haven’t shared with anyone yet. Not all of these funny pictures/articles/ideas really need to be shared with the world, and, every now and then when I do start to look through them, and there is a dead link, it’s not like I really know what was there in the first place.
I guess we’ll see how it works out. For years, this website has been my dump for ideas/links/whatever and it’s all terribly organized, but I like it that way. This is the one place where I really feel I can store my thoughts in an articulate manner and, because it’s on the internet, and, in some sense, available to the public, I feel the need to actually think and to create quality work.
I know I won’t get out of the habit of compulsive list-making or taking extensive random notes or writing down all of my ideas, but I really hope that this time, I can do it in an organized fashion that has me getting a lot more shit done.

Giant music collections etc.

Awesome thing of the week, Music, Robots, Time Paradox, Website

Posted March 19, 2010 at 12:43 am by Severed Head

Just in the last few minutes I found this article, which is really quite amazing. My favorite part is the discussion, and I really feel like I could talk about this stuff forever.
With all of my friends who have large collections of music, I always ask them how they organize it. I didn’t realize there were so many people out there that do this too. I really feel like this thread should evolve into a message board with just questions and ideas regarding music collections. Specifically, the following topics would be very interesting: Software used to access it (iTunes vs. Windows Media vs. cetera), Proper tagging (use of MusicBrainz? How to handle genres), playlists, capitalization, etc. I am just a huge nerd for all of this kind of stuff.
Speaking of which, I’ve gone about the task of setting up an HTPC situation. For those of you who don’t know, HTPC is an Home Theater PC… But this is an HTMac. Basically, the idea is to have all of your media hooked up to your TV. So, from my TV, ideally, the end product is this:
A computer hooked up to the TV, very easy and quick to turn on.
A remote interface (right now, my iPod Touch)
A nice interface on-screen(XBMC w/Aeon)
Access to streaming services (specifically, YouTube/Netflix/Hulu/Any other new TV sites I’ve discovered recently)
A database of stored movies and TV shows

Now, my particular situation is somewhat unique right now. A lot of other people will just scrap up an old PC and strip it down to what it needs to work. Currently, I’m just using my laptop and an external hard drive, which I have to lug over to my TV every time I want to use them, but it really does seem a lot better than just watching them on my laptop’s screen. Soon though, I’m looking to purchase an old MacMini and a 1 TB NAS drive. The NAS drive would allow me to access all of these movies and TV shows wirelessly, but I’m not really exactly clear on how all of that works.
One feature I really want, that doesn’t seem readily available, is a shuffle feature for TV shows. I don’t have cable right now, but I do have a fair amount of TV show DVDs. I have a few episodes on my computer so far, and I’d like just to be able to put them on shuffle, as if I had a TV station composed entirely of shows that I love with no commercials. That really seems like the ultimate HTPC situation.
I also seem to be one of the few XBMC users who wants to store deleted scenes from DVDs and TV shows, and have them link up with the movies/TV episodes themselves. I’ve finally figured it out a solution, but it’s not exactly satisfactory. Right now though, it’s only a matter of ripping everything to my external hard drive
Coming soon: Piracy is in the news, and I want to defend the pirates. But not in some stupid way like Cory Doctorow. His point seems to be that “the industry” are restricting the user’s copying of data to very specific ways, which really don’t make a lot of sense, and I completely agree with this. My beef with Cory is that he doesn’t seem to come right out and go “Fuck you guys, stealing is so awesome and convenient that everyone should do it,” but posts a lot of articles suggesting things like “Suing pirates seems wrong” and “Shutting down torrent sites seems wrong.” He seems to avoid the idea that this is stealing, and that these sites have a bunch of movies/music that people are downloading for free to circumvent any sort of payment system.
But maybe I’ve simply misinterpreted something here or there. I’m not posting all of my opinions yet because I’d like to do a bit more research first…
Also, check out this site for healthcare: Top 10 facts to know about health care reform… There are a lot of uninformed/misinformed people out there with strong opinions, so here’s a neutral source with good information. Please read this if you’re going to speak out about these issues. You’d be amazed at how many vehemently angry people are just completely wrong because some stupid fucking chain e-mail got to them first.

Wow. This has become like an actual blog again, and I’m acting like people read this. WEIRD.

I think maybe we should just start booking gigs here in Phoenix. I will find some that you and I can both make in terms of dates. If we get booked, I’ll really quickly record some shit and send it to you, and we’ll basically jam some songs off of that at the show since we won’t really have time to rehearse.
Just to get the ball rolling and play some fun shows. What do you think?

Harrison’s Highly Critical, Judgemental, Elitist Rants Presents: Drugs, Alcohol, Religion, etc.

Awesome thing of the week, Conspiracies, Dreams, Guitar, Life, Lifelist, Limb, Music, Philosophy, Pissed off rants

Posted May 31, 2009 at 8:55 pm by Severed Head

First of all, let me get this out of the way if any of you are wondering. People are all fucking stupid.
There.
You know why kids who go to Catholic school are fucked up? It’s because they’re raised by people who make certain behaviors taboo. Drinking or drugs or candy or video games or sex or what the fuck ever. Simply, when people are repressed, socially, politically, or otherwise, they end up lashing out, eventually. People who don’t drink who suddenly start drinking do stupid fucking shit and burst out and get drunk. Nearly everyone does. I personally RARELY hear of anyone who starts off drinking light and knowing his or her limit. No, they start off pushing their limit. (This applies to driving too. There’s a lot of ass holes out there slamming on the accelerator to make it to a fucking red light. If this isn’t a perfect metaphor for the folly of this American society, I don’t know what is) And I’m not saying people shouldn’t drink, but they need to practice restraint. Moderation is the key to ANYTHING being good. Our society emphasizes two extremes: instant gratification, and this religious bullshit of nearly everything enjoyable is related to sin.
But here’s why getting drunk is stupid. It’s one thing to drink to get a buzz to relax a bit and get out of your head. It’s another to kill brain cells and act out and deal with your problems, emotionally or socially, with a bottle. People call it social lubrication for a reason. But once you start depending on that for social interactions, you’re fucking pathetic. Plus, let’s be honest. 90% of being drunk is acting like you’re drunk. Alcohol can affect your system, but only as fucking much as you let it. Not only are YOU the one choosing to imbibe more alcohol once you’ve already caught a buzz, YOU are the one deciding to act like a fucking idiot at a party to get attention. And the thing that bothers me most? People embrace this behavior. Everyone does. People enjoy a drunk. At this age at least. Once you get older? Not quite as much. Want to know why? Because it’s fucking pathetic.
Now, I’m all for the idea that life is about your interactions at people and that, while we’re here in our short lives, we should enjoy it, but personally, the large majority of people I know drink in order to be someone else. They’re almost repressing an alternate identity, and then when they drink, letting that personality come out to become the drunk version of themselves where it’s acceptable to act on impulse and do stupid things.
Largely, drinking is self-destructive. So are drugs and any other form of acting out. Sex with strangers or people you just met. etc. This doesn’t seem apparent to a lot of people. This is because, going back to earlier, our society emphasizes this instant gratification bullshit. AND YOU ALL GIVE INTO IT. There are a few good ones out there, but let’s be honest, THIS BASIC PRINCIPLE IS HOW OUR COUNTRY JUST GOT FUCKING FUCKED. People don’t want to put in the goddamn hard work to make money these days, and some ass holes making money on buying and selling stocks made some decisions that fucked us, the general public. I don’t want to get political here, because I don’t think it’s a political issue. Stupid people got into too much debt, putting trust into companies who are supposed to keep one’s money safe, but DIDN’T because they were too busy fucking around trying to make a quick buck. And I mean. I can understand where these bankers and stock traders who fucked our shit up are coming from. They don’t want to work hard. They want to take the quick, easy option, and make lots of money. Nearly everyone who comes into my store wants a new condition book for a used price. Everyone wants to be on the winning end of a good deal, yes? But when it comes down to taking the easy option over the hard option, the easy option almost always wins. The hard option might take a bit longer to pay off, but that’s not what we want. Well, let me tell you this, kiddies. If you keep taking those easy options, you’re going to fail, and you’re going to be pathetic. Andrew W.K., not exactly a great philosopher, someone who preaches partying and instant gratification, outside of his music, does have a really great idea. I remember watching an episode of his show where he said “Nothing easy is ever good, and nothing good is ever easy.” I don’t like maxims that use “nothing” and “ever”, but looking at my life and everyone’s around me lately, it has never seemed more true than right now.
Adam Carolla has a podcast, and with nearly every guest that comes on, Adam asks “What’s your story? How did you get to be successful?” You know many of them said shit like “Well, I just happened to be in the right place at the right time, and I got lucky?” NONE OF THEM. IT TAKES FUCKING BLOOD, SWEAT, AND TEARS TO GET TO ANYWHERE REMOTELY RESEMBLING THE TOP. Do you think it’s any coincidence that Brian May and Paul Gilbert, arguably two of the greatest and most successful guitarists, who get to do whatever musical projects they like without worry for money or approval from critics, don’t do drugs or drink heavily? IT’S NOT. And I want to be at that level, personally. I’d love to have complete artistic freedom, playing music with my idols, or able to play with any musician I want. As my old chemistry teacher said, it’s the American dream to aspire to mediocrity. Well, I say: FUCK THAT SHIT. I’m not going to settle. I’m sticking to my fucking morals and my beliefs and my work ethic, except that instead of just sticking with that stuff, I’m going to keep making it fucking better. A lot of you know that I’ve worked harder and fucking harder each year for my life. I’m doing two majors at college, and two of the hardest fucking majors, I might add, and I’m doing it in just a bit more than 4 years. I’m not going to sit on for 5 years of college and hope everything works out, I’m fucking making it work out.
And you think Paul Gilbert and Brian May and all these great musicians are naturally that way? Of course not. I read this wonderful article by my guitar instructor talking about some of the great musicians of all time, the classical composers. Do you think they just got more inspired than everyone else, and that’s why they’re so good? No. They put hours and fucking hours into their craft. They worked their goddamn asses off to get to a level of musicianship some of us can hardly comprehend. This shit takes fucking time and hard work. And now their music is still being played today. More than half the shit on the radio is never going to be heard from again 100 years from now, but people are going to keep listening to and playing Bach forever.
And let me just add, by the way, that most of you people out there who really need the help don’t fucking accept it. My beliefs and my ideas about alcohol and drugs go against nearly EVERYONE’s I know, and I hardly exaggerate. I have a few friends and a wonderful girlfriend who agree with me and who curtail these stupid behaviors, but I must emphasize how few these people are. And it’s hard. It’s hard for me to maintain certain friendships and seeing them go down this road and not giving into the ease of mediocrity. It’s fucking hard as well. So why do I do continue to be such a stubborn ass hole when it comes to drugs and alcohol or being lazy? Because, like Andrew says, nothing good is ever easy and nothing easy is ever good.

Harrison's Highly Critical, Judgemental, Elitist Rants Presents: The Peace Sign and Shitty Drivers

Awesome thing of the week, Fun, Pissed off rants

Posted March 19, 2009 at 11:42 pm by Severed Head

What the fuck? First, I’ll start off with what happened to me tonight, then I’ll go off from there about reasons why I hate this section of society. I’m looking to make this a regular column, where I basically yell at people. Tonight, I was driving home on a street which has a posted speed limit of 40 miles an hour. I normally go about 5 mph over, and feel that this is the perfect reasonable speed at which to drive, but I’m not saying that everyone should and different people have different needs. However, since this is such a small street, of two lanes, where most people are going about 2 over, I feel it is fucking ridiculous when ass holes try to go about 15 over. So this guy goes speeding past me on the right, and so I honked at him. He then, being the douche bag he is, gave me the peace sign. To some extent, this could be understood, if he was telling me to chill. He then proceeded to get as close as possible to the car in front of him so he could change lanes without braking. I saw the line of cars in front of me panic as this happened, because he did it so quickly, and without any consideration for the other drivers on the road. He eventually cut in front of them when given barely enough room, and went on his way.
To a red. fucking. light.
He sped up, and cut off like 3 cars and tailgated one so he could get THAT far ahead on his way to a red light.
I’m sure part of this is just the presence of douchebags and ass holes in this town, but a large part of this is also the WILD misinterpretation of the peace sign. It represents peace and harmony. Not being an ass hole and causing danger to a few lives. Nobody got hurt in this instance, and in most instances like this, nobody does get hurt, but it does cause panic and anger and frustration with nearly ALL of the people involved. Using a peace sign doesn’t excuse him from being an arrogant, selfish, aggressive driver. It means he’s an ass hole who doesn’t know what the fuck “peace” is. And this is representative of society as a whole. A majority of people want to go on with their lives peacefully without ass holes fucking with them, to put it simply and full of cuss words. But the problem arises when THESE SAME PEOPLE ARE ASS HOLES TO EVERYONE ELSE. It’s hypocritical, clearly, but it really shows just how goddamn ignorant everyone is and how inconsiderate people are, ESPECIALLY when it comes to driving in this town. People don’t want to be cut off, but expect to be ignored when people cut them off? No. I am going to honk my fucking horn at shitty drivers and call them on their bullshit driving. Someone has to. Everyone who doesn’t, I feel, is a goddamn pussy. We can’t let these ass holes take over the road completely, but the sad thing is, they do, and most people LET them. LET’S NOT LET THEM ANYMORE. PEOPLE NEED TO DRIVE CONSIDERATELY, AND IF THEY DON’T, HONK. MAKE A BIG FUCKING DEAL. It’s dangerous to EVERYONE involved, and it’s, as shown in this case, and I’m sure many everyone has seen, unnecessary in the long run. Hell, even in the short run, this ass hole was only got about 20 feet ahead of everyone else while risking their safety!
In conclusion: FUCK ASSHOLE DRIVERS
